Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s insouciant behaviour has yet again caused hindrance in public development. In 2020-21, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation sanctioned projects worth ₹447 crores. But, the rosy picture seldom holds true that ₹325 crores worth of work is pending.
The civic body officials handed a construction and resurrection contract of 28 roads worth ₹168 crores to a single contractor, KC Infrabilt Pvt. Ltd. But, the project allotted in 2020-21 remains almost untouched.
Statistics say that AMC distributed projects of 377 roads rated ₹400 crores to 13 contractors. Regardless, AMC’s negligence towards them has left Ahmedabad roads incomplete and unrepaired.
The data signifies that 12-15 contactors have a monopoly over the AMC tenders. Moreover, the price they charge is 20-25% more than the estimated tender cost. However, after spending an amount on the city roads, the one rain shower swept the newly constructed ones away.
The rules and regulations of AMC mention that road construction has to complete by June 15 before the start of the monsoon season. Although it is already June 20, the work remains unfinished.
Furthermore, opposition leader Shehzad Khan Pathan alleged that the allocation of tenders to a single contractor indicates corruption in the civic body. In conclusion, he has requested an inquiry into the matter. He also referred to the completed work as ‘vague.’
