Cannes Film Festival: Important Events From Day 1

Cannes Festival opened today with the glam and galore that is deserving of this prestigious event. Especially, since the festival is taking place after 2 years, there was a rejuvenating atmosphere of joy throughout the opening ceremony. Celebs from all around the globe have participated in this most-talked film festival of the French Rivera. Here are some highlights from the Day 1.

21 Films Competing This Cannes Film Festival

Like every year, Cannes Film Festival 2022 too has 21 films competing against each other for the top prize, the Palme d’Or. Not only past winners have submitted their amazing works here, but the festival is graced by some up-and-coming and promising filmmakers. The winners of the festival, which began on Tuesday, will be announced at the closing ceremony on May 28.

Films like Crimes of future, Triangle of sadness, Tchaikovsky’s Wife, Armageddon Time, Broker, Showing Up, Tori and Lokita, Stars at noon, R.M.N, Close, Boy from Heaven, Holy Spider, Forever Young, Nostalgia, Brother and sister, Leila’s Brothers, EO, Pacification, Mother and son and The eight mountains will compete for Palme d’Or

All the mentioned films will compete for Palme d’Or, which is considered the most prestigious award in film fraternity.

Cannes Indian Connection

India has been recognized as a country with the official Marché du Film award at the Cannes Film Festival this year. This is the first time a country has been given this honor and it comes at a time when India has completed 75 years of Independence. Like India, France is also celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations this year.

To show the diversity and richness of the country at the 75th Cannes Film Festival this year, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting prepared a delegation of personalities from the cinema world and the music industry from across the country. The delegation was led by the country’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.

Famous Actor Kamal Hassan , Music Composer AR Rahman, Folk Musician Mame Khan, Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Nayantara, Pooja Hegde, CFBC Chairman Prasoon Joshi, Actor R. Madhavan, music composer Ricky Cage, senior film directors Shekhar Kapur, Tamannaah Bhatia and Vani Tripathi walked on the red carpet along with Anurag Thakur

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Speech At Opening Ceremony

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s pre-recorded speech was streamed at 75th Cannes film festival, in which Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged filmmakers to confront dictators just like Charlie Chaplin did with Hitler.

Zelensky received thunderous standing ovation from the audience after he quoted Chaplin’s final speech from the film the great dictator, which says, “The hate of men will pass, And dictators die, and the power they took from people gets return to the people.”

Indian Divas On Red Carpet

Deepika Padukone, Tamannaah Bhatia and Urvashi Rautela were all seen on strutting on the red carpet, flaunting their amazing looks.

Michel Haznavicius comedy film “Final Cut”

The first film which premiered on the first day of festival was a zombie-themed comedy film ‘Final Cut’, directed by Academy award winner French filmmaker Michel Haznavicius. The film is French remake of Japanese film ‘One Cut of the Dead’

The film was previously scheduled for the screening at the Sundance festival but due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, the festival was postponed. Hence, the film is now officially streaming at Cannes Film Festival

Cannes film festival is considered as most prestigious film festival among film fraternity and every filmmaker dreams of holding the prestigious Palme d’Or once in their lifetime. The festival has just started and in the next 12 days, 21 films will be screened. It is going to be fun ride for all!
