Grishma Murder Case: Gujarat Govt Moves HC To Confirm Death Sentence For Fenil Goyani

The state government filed an application in the Gujarat High Court to confirm Fenil Goyani’s death sentence in the infamous Grishma Vekariya murder case.
As per the law, the lower court’s death penalty sentence must be confirmed by the Gujarat High Court.

About the case:

Grishma was murdered in full public view on February 12 in front of her mother, brother, and relatives. Surat police filed a charge sheet within days, and given the gravity of the case, a speedy trial ensued.

The police charged him under Indian Penal Code Sections 302, 307, 354(d) 1 (E), 342, 504 and 506(2) based on a complaint lodged at the Kamrej station, Surat. They also submitted a charge sheet of 2,500 pages at the Kathor court in the district, within five days of the incident. The elaborate charge sheet prepared by the officials consisted of statements of over 190 witnesses, documentary evidence, scientific and medical evidence and CCTV footage.

A Surat court, after repeatedly watching the video of the incident, revealed that the accused had kept another paddle in his pants. During the investigation, it was also revealed that Fenil Goyani had tried to buy an AK-47 rifle to kill Grishma.

Arguments between the prosecution and the defence lasted 70 days, during which documentary evidence, FSL reports, and other factors were considered before declaring the crime to be “rarest of rare.”

The court also ruled that the murder was committed in the same way as a professional killer. The court heard both sides and after examining all the evidence, announced Fenil Goyani guilty on April 21. Goyani was sentenced to death by the Surat Court.
