Heavy rainfall causes collapse in Mumbai

Mumbai witnessed a very heavy rainfall Saturday night, as a result of which, two incidents of collapses took place in the city’s Chembur and Vikhroli areas on Sunday.

At least 18 people died in a wall collapse incident in Bharat Nagar area of Chembur, according to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Mumbai’s fire brigade team reached the incident place and had rescued 16 people from the site. The second incident took place in the Surya Nagar area of Vikhroli, where a residential structure collapsed. Three people were reported dead in the incident with two seriously injured and at least nine people were rescued from the site. The injured people of both the incidents are taken to Rajawadi and Shatabdi hospital of the city for the treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on the incident and an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 Lakh for the families of those deceased has also been announced by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Also, additional financial assistance of Rs. 2 Lakh will also be given to the next of kin of those who died in the incident from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

Earlier on Saturday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Mumbai and predicted rains for the next 24 hours in the city. Also, several parts of the city have reported waterlogging.
