IITG Alumni Rahul Kumar Grabs Fulbright-Nehru Research Fellowship

Rahul Kumar, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITG) grabbed the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2022-23. He outdid his Ph.D. Mathematics from IITGN in 2021, overseen by Prof Atul Dixit. Rahul is an employee as a postdoc at the IBS Center for Geometry and Physics, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), South Korea. Moreover, he will now head to Penn State University, USA, as a part of a fellowship to advance his research. supervision

Rahul’s Ph.D. at IITGN and the fellowship at POSTECH revolves around Analytic Number Theory and Special Functions. One of the top departments in the USA for his research is the Mathematics Department at Penn State University, where he will work for two years, beginning in November 2022.

Rahul thanked his beloved professors and voiced his excitement, “I am delighted to know that I have been selected for this prestigious fellowship. I sincerely thank USIEF for selecting me for this fellowship. I also thank Prof. Bruce Berndt, my Ph.D. guide Prof. Atul Dixit, Prof Balasubramanian, and Prof Akshaa Vatwani for writing recommendation letters for me. I express my gratitude to Prof Winnie Li from Penn State University for supporting my application as a host. I am excited to visit and work with the faculty there. This two-year fellowship will provide me with a golden opportunity to broaden my research area and build new academic collaborations there, which will help me throughout my career. Apart from academic benefits, this visit will also allow me to gain insights into American society and its culture, which is also one of the aims of this fellowship.”

Prof Atul Dixit, Associate Professor of Mathematics at IITGN and Ph.D. supervisor of Rahul, said, “I am glad that Rahul will be visiting the Department of Mathematics at the Penn State University through this fellowship. It will add a new dimension to his research work and help him grow as a researcher and an individual.”

IITGN holds pride in saying that only two other fellows have the Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Mathematics in the USA. Additionally, among these two fellows, one is again an Early Career Fellow from IITGN.

Rahul will also be given a monthly stipend, a professional allowance, round-trip air travel, accident, and sickness coverage following US government regulations, support for the J-1 visa, and other benefits. In addition, the fellowship may pay for one qualifying dependent traveling with him to another country and a dependent allowance.

Only a select number of applicants are chosen each year for this prestigious fellowship, established by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), Fulbright Commission in India. This fellowship aims to give promising young Indian teachers and researchers the chance to develop their research skills and get access to some of the best resources in their fields of interest.
