Cases of heart attacks and premature deaths of young people, between ages 20 and 40 years, have increased 30% in Ahmedabad since 2020 when the pandemic struck. At least eight cases of youngsters dying due to heart failure while playing cricket have been reported from various parts of Gujarat in the last few months. The sudden rise in heart attack among young patients can be attributed to increased stress levels and sudden spike in hypertension, said doctors.

But since, it has gone up about 30%.” About likely reasons, Dr Jain said one of the major factors is lack of regular exercise, unhealthy diet and insufficient sleep.

“Stress is escalating the cardiac challenge among youngsters. It causes hypertension, which is a trigger point for cardiac conditions.”

According to doctors, problems like angina or chest pain caused by restricted blood flow to the heart muscles, and heart attacks where the blood flow to the heart muscles suddenly get blocked, as also heart failure where the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly are the possible conditions occurring among youngsters.

He cites the case of 32-year working professional who was rushed to the hospital after he suddenly complained of severe chest pain. “The ECG report suggested a massive heart attack. His left vessel LAD had 100% occluded with a clot. The patient was at a very high risk of sudden closure of the left main vessel and instant death. He was initially given half a dose of thrombolytic agent to dissolve thrombus-blood clot, followed by sucking the clot out of the heart vessel,” he shared, stating that the case had no history of hypertension or heart condition.

Director of Cathlab at Apollo Hospital, Dr Jayesh Prajapati, added: “Cardiac cases in the age group of 25 to 40 have shot up in the last three years. Therefore, young people must take cardiac fitness tests at any good hospital before starting heavy exercise in the gym, marathons or any sports like cricket, tennis etc.”
