The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized nearly 2, 990 kg of heroin at Mundra port last September, which is scheduled to be destroyed today. The operation is supervised by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The CBIC, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs would be conducting a Drug Destruction day on 8th June as a part of Iconic week of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”, celebrations of the Ministry of Finance to mark the 75th year of Indian independence.
In total 42, 000 kg of narcotics is set to be destroyed. Out of that figure, 2,990 kg is high- grade heroin which was seized at the Mundra port run by Adani group in Kutch district last September. The contraband was estimated to be around 21,000 crore, the largest ever consignment to be stopped in India. Sitharaman will virtually oversee the process of destroying the contraband, which is held at Guwahati, Lucknow, Mumbai, Mundra, Patna and Siliguri.
The contraband is suspected to have arrived from Afghanistan, and had been shipped from Bandar Abbas port in Iran. The consignment was declared to be semi processed tal and talc stones in the official documents, however based on inputs the DRI had intercepted the consignment.
The DRI had also arrested a couple claiming the firm run by them had supplied the cargo. A few other people were also arrested in lieu of being involved in the case. The case was eventually transferred to the National Investigating Agency in a special NIA court in Ahmedabad.
