Enforcement Directorate demanded the presence of Rahul Gandhi to question him on Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and Young Indian Private Limited (YIL). On Monday, the ED interrogated the face of Congress Rahul Gandhi in regards to the National Herald money-laundering case.
Further, the ED summoned Congress President Sonia Gandhi. However, they postponed the meeting to June 23 as she contracted COVID. On June 13, Rahul Gandhi arrived at the Delhi EC during massive protests in his support. Later, reports of the police manhandling senior Congress leaders came to light.
About The National Herald Case
The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, started the National Herald newspaper. Later, the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) was the first to publish it. When the AJL faced financial issues in 2021, Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda, the well-known Gandhi loyalists, took over as directors.
However, it arose as a case of money laundering when the BJP leader and Indian economist Subramaniam Swamy complained against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others. He accused them of conspiring to cheat and faulty allocation of funds.
Currently, the Delhi court is handling the National Herald corruption case against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, their firms, and associated individuals. The complaint with the bench of Metropolitan Magistrate states that Associated Journals Limited (AJL) took an interest-free loan of ₹90.25 crores (US$12 million) from the Indian National Congress that remains unpaid. Swamy alleged criminal misappropriation by both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
The ED has interrogated Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Pawan Bansal. Sonia Gandhi, earlier summoned for the same, was admitted to a Delhi hospital after acquiring difficulties from COVID.
According to reports, the Gandhis have a 76% stake in the accession of AJL by YIL. However, as per the Income-Tax Department, the conjoined share of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi was 83.3% in the YIL. Congress leader Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes own the rest, 15.5% and 12%.
