SC Grants Bail To Indrani Mukerjea In Sheena Bora Murder Case

| Updated: May 21, 2022 18:35

Indrani Mukerjea, who is on trial for the murder of her daughter Sheena on April 24, 2012, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Indrani Mukerjea stepped out of Byculla women’s jail on Friday evening, nearly seven years after her arrest in August 2015 for the suspected murder of her daughter Sheena Bora.

Her bail conditions include surrendering her passport before a special court, not leaving India without the court’s approval, and not contacting or tampering with any of the witnesses in the case. She has also been ordered to attend the trial and not request any adjournments.

Around 3 p.m. on Friday, the special CBI Court issued a release memo for Mukherjea, which was afterwards placed at Byculla jail.

She was one of the jail’s most visible inmates, frequently finding herself at the centre of controversy. Indrani Mukerjea was released from the women’s prison at 5.30 p.m., escorted by her lawyer, Sana Raees Khan. She told reporters she was “extremely glad” and had “learned a lot in prison.”

“Bohot Khushi ho rahi hai, no other feelings exist right now.” Everyone should believe in the Indian legal system. There is justice, even if it takes time. For the time being, I am overwhelmed by the independence I have regained owing to my excellent lawyers. This has restored my faith in the judiciary, and I am confident that it is a fair institution. “I’m not going to talk about the matter,” she stated as she walked to her Worli flat.

In response to whether she may speak to her daughter, Vidhi, who is a witness in the case, Mukerjea stated, “I cannot speak to Vidhi right now, but I can speak to her if she deposes, so perhaps I will request the opportunity to do so.”

Mukerjea told the media in Worli, below her Marlow building house, which she resided with her husband Peter before their arrest in the case, “I am writing a book.” It’s not about prison life. Everyone has been forgiven. I learned to forgive while in prison, and I am grateful to the judiciary…. I will not discuss the case or the jail. Inside the prison, I learned empathy. I am looking forward to a new beginning and have no plans as of now. For the first time in seven years, I want to gaze at the night sky.”

On August 25, 2015, Mukerjea was detained by the Mumbai Police, four days after her former driver Shyamvar Rai was nabbed with an illegal firearm. Rai admitted to authorities that he was involved in the murder of his former boss’s daughter, Sheena Bora.

In August 2015, the police arrested Rai, Mukerjea, and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna.

Sanjeev Khanna and Peter Mukerjea, Mukerjea’s ex-husbands, are also on trial for the alleged murder.
