Gujarat’s employment crisis was demonstrated at the beginning of this month when around 17 lakh job aspirants applied for 3400 vacant posts of Talati ( village panchayat executive head )
Despite the gravity of the situation, this is neither a political nor an election issue as safety and security remain to be the priority concerns of the government, remarked political analysts and commentators
Numbers according to the state’s Employment Exchange Department reveal that there are 4 lakh, unemployed people, as of March 2022. A huge chunk of that figure, i.e., 3,85,506 people are literate and five percent are semi-skilled
Although unemployment is a major socio-economic issue, it does not make it to the highlights section as society leans more towards issues such as safety and security. These issues which were earlier only seen in urban areas have now been a rising apprehension in the rural areas as well.
Amit Dholakia, Head of Political Science Department of the Maharaja Sayajirao University analyzed that in an ideal world, Unemployment and Good Governance should be on top of the list of concerns, but the entire society is divided on Hindu Muslim issues because of which increasing unemployment rates are overlooked
It is observed that even though youth complain about Unemployment, they too vote based on their religious sentiments in elections. Hence, this has given political parties an opportunity to push back the issues that demand concern, only to focus on religion as a tool to win votes.
Dholakia further concluded that the major problem of this generation is poor civic awareness as the youth are not at all bothered about their rights and duties. This harsh truth is giving political parties a chance to spread misinformation and adversely impact society at large.
