19-year-old Woman Killed For Not Returning Calls

Crime statistics released by India Data Map place Gujarat at 19th out of 36 states in terms of offences committed per 1,00,000 people. Yet, judging by recent violent incidents, the state appears to be moving steadily towards a higher rank—possibly even among the top five.

Yesterday, a Vibes of India report detailed how a 29-year-old man raped his sister out of anger over her romantic involvement. Crimes in Gujarat, it seems, are increasingly being driven by motives as weak and senseless as this.

On Thursday, a 19-year-old first-year undergraduate student in Bhuj city, Kutch, was fatally attacked with a knife outside her college. Police said the attack was carried out by a friend, allegedly upset that the woman had cut off communication with him. The accused had gone to her college to meet her after she had stopped responding to his calls and messages.

According to reports, the attacker has been identified as Mohit Siddhpara, a 22-year-old AC repair technician and resident of Gandhidham. Following a manhunt that lasted several hours, he was arrested late Thursday night, reports added.

Initially, the Bhuj ‘A’ Division police registered a case of attempt to murder. However, after the victim succumbed to her injuries later that night, Siddhpara was charged with murder.

Speaking to a media outlet, police inspector AM Patel was quoted as saying, “The woman and the accused were friends and neighbours back in Gandhidham. The woman had come to study in Bhuj and had cut all contacts with the accused. So, he came to meet her outside the college gate and then slashed her with a knife. She was taken to GK General Hospital where she died during treatment.”

This year alone, Gujarat witnessed several chilling murder cases across cities: a 19-year-old student was stabbed to death by a jilted lover outside her college in Bhuj. In Amreli, a 55-year-old man was killed in his sleep by his nephew over a financial dispute.

Ahmedabad saw the stabbing of a man near Ghodasar Bridge, later linked to a juvenile over money.

In Morbi, a 35-year-old woman battling addiction was murdered by her relatives. In Ahmedabad’s Maninagar, a Class 10 student was fatally stabbed by a junior inside a school, sparking outrage over the institution’s alleged negligence.
