Teachers are the backbone of our education system. Without their support and commitment, it would be impossible to create lasting impact. Keeping this in mind, the state technical education department has adopted the 360-degree performance review mechanism for college teaching staff.
The state commissioner issued a circular to all grant-in-aid and government-run degree and diploma engineering and pharmacy colleges, telling them to implement the 360-degree mechanism to appraise the performance of teaching staff.
According to the sources, the state technical education department is the first in the country to adopt the 360-degree performance review mechanism, which will help in effective promotions of teaching staff.
Five areas — teaching processes, students’ feedback, departmental activities, institute-level activities and annual confidential reports (ACRs) will be covered under this comprehensive review.
Guidelines have been provided to colleges to help them implement the system effectively.
“360-degree feedback is one of the criteria for screening proposals for promotion. The feedback system is a shift from the conventional performance appraisal process. It is self-reporting of the faculty on their teaching process, contribution to the department, institute and society. This system provides a holistic view of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses, and helps identify areas for improvement,” the October 2023 circular addressed to the principals of colleges, said.
The circular also has a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP), outlining the step-by step process for calculating the 360-degree feedback score.
“It is imperative for the principal of government and grant-in-aid degree/diploma engineering and pharmacy colleges in the state to implement this SOP and guidelines diligently and report compliance,” the circular said.
While claiming marks under the 360-degree review, faculty members have been asked to provide all necessary proof. The circular also states that claims based on false data will lead to action against the individual making such claims.
Activities for the academic year will be considered for the period from July 1 to June 30.
