Gujarat may have been a model state for development and economic growth but it remains vulnerable to drug cartels. That it has achieved notoriety as a drug-riddled state is not an understatement given the startling data. A maximum quantity of drugs has been seized in the state since 2021. Gujarat’s porous coastline makes it a convenient route for the drug network.
The Crime Branch Special Operations Group (SOG) has manfully taken up the task to crack down on the drug mafia in Ahmedabad. Shockingly, during the SOG’s operations, it emerged that women played a key role in the supply of drugs, particularly in the sale of MD drugs. Last year, a woman arrested for drug trafficking in Ahmedabad yearned for MD even during investigations.
According to a report, of the 36 offences registered by SOG, at least 10 involve women, who find the lure of easy money from drug trade hard to resist.
The news report cited an example of a 33-year-old woman who was arrested with 29.68 mg of MD from Khanpur. This woman, a prostitute, was initiated into drug consumption by her clients. A police officer was quoted as saying, “She had married the man she loved. Her husband left her and started living separately in Mumbai when he learnt she was involved in flesh trade. She is an MD addict and peddles the drug after sourcing it mainly from Mumbai.”
Another drug dealer from Mumbai is on the run. Several women drug peddlers from Tamil Nadu and Ahmedabad are linked to the trade of cannabis.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been actively tracking women drug peddlers. But these women are so well trained that they swiftly change locations and manage to conceal evidence.
