Tech Layoffs Surge As Amazon Leads Latest Wave of Job Cuts

| Updated: October 28, 2025 21:43

Layoffs continue to hit households and threaten livelihood. Companies are going lean, with one of the biggest names in global e-commerce making its next move.

Amazon is set to eliminate about 30,000 corporate positions as part of a major cost-reduction drive.

Reports claim that the latest round will affect nearly 10 per cent of Amazon’s 3,50,000 corporate employees.

Here’s some disconcerting stats presented by trueup.io. It says that “so far in 2025, there have been 582 layoffs at tech companies with 1,92,332 people impacted (639 people per day).”

Data from Layoffs.fyi, a report claims, shows that nearly 98,000 technology jobs have been cut so far this year across 216 companies. The total for 2024 reached 153,000, underscoring the ongoing consolidation in the sector.

Reports claim the job cuts may be seen across different divisions. That includes human resources, services, and operations.

The reduction in Amazon follows a report that the company plans to slash up to 15 per cent of its human resources workforce. Further layoffs are expected across other departments.

Over the past two years, the company has been steadily reducing headcount in various business units, including devices, communications, and podcasting.

According to Reuters, the downsizing builds on a series of smaller cuts made earlier in 2025. About 110 roles were recently removed from Amazon’s Wondery podcast division, while several hundred employees were let go from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud division in July.

Reports added that in May, nearly 100 positions were vacated in the devices and services unit.

The cost-cutting campaign is reportedly part of an initiative by Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy.

Reports added that we wanted to do away with needless bureaucracy and management layers.

To achieve this, he launched an internal feedback system. He collected over 1,500 employee submissions. It led to 450 process changes to improve efficiency.

Earlier, he indicated that artificial intelligence would have a significant hand in automating repetitive work.

Despite the corporate reductions, Amazon plans to hire 250,000 seasonal workers to manage surging demand during the holiday period. Shares of the company rose 1.3 per cent to $227.11 near Monday’s market close.
