For years, Amul has been more than milk. It has been the heartbeat of Indian households. Amul has redefined India’s dairy story, becoming a symbol of India’s cooperative strength.
Now, it has been recognised for India’s cooperative movement. Brand Amul has been ranked the world’s number one cooperative based on GDP per capita performance.
The ranking highlights Amul’s steady growth, innovative strategies, and commitment to putting people first in a fiercely competitive global market.
The announcement came as the World Cooperative Monitor 2025, developed by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) in partnership with EURICSE, was officially unveiled at the ICA CM50 Conference in Doha, Qatar.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director, GCMMF, was quoted as saying, “Amul is a brand owned entirely by farmers. They manage everything—from milk collection and processing to marketing. Our impact goes far beyond economics; our model supports multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty reduction, gender equality, and sustainable communities.”
“Amul’s currency isn’t milk — it’s trust, the trust of millions of producers and billions of consumers. This recognition by the ICA is a proud moment for every member of the Amul family and reaffirms the enduring strength of India’s cooperative movement and the vision of our founders to create prosperity through collective enterprise.”
In Doha, world leaders adopted a political declaration at the Second UN Social Summit 2025, recognising how cooperatives drive poverty eradication, social inclusion, employment creation, and social transformation. The International Year of Cooperatives 2025 was also officially declared closed at Doha today, with a resolution to declare the International Year of Cooperatives once every ten years, the release added.
The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), headquartered in Brussels, represents cooperatives worldwide and promotes their sustainable business model. Each year, the World Cooperative Monitor analyses the economic and social impact of the world’s largest cooperatives across sectors.
