A simmering internal rift within the Congress burst into the open after senior leader Digvijaya Singh shared a throwback photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and openly praised the organisational strength of the BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS. The post, made on the day of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, was widely seen as a pointed message to the party’s top leadership.
The image, from a 1996 Gujarat event, shows a young Modi sitting on the floor near BJP veteran LK Advani. Singh called the picture “impactful”, highlighting how a grassroots RSS-BJP worker rose through the ranks to become Chief Minister and eventually Prime Minister — a journey he described as proof of the power of organisational discipline. By tagging Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, Singh made clear that his remarks were meant for the high command.
The BJP quickly seized on the post to attack the Congress, questioning Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and accusing the party of being autocratic and undemocratic.
As the controversy escalated, Singh clarified that he remains ideologically opposed to the RSS, accusing it of disrespecting the Constitution. However, he maintained that its organisational strength was undeniable and contrasted it with Congress’s own weaknesses. Singh admitted that while Congress remains a movement-based party, it struggles to convert that energy into votes due to poor grassroots organisation.
The episode follows Singh’s recent calls for internal reforms and decentralised decision-making in the Congress, including a public swipe at Rahul Gandhi for being “not easy to convince” — reinforcing perceptions of growing unease within the party’s ranks.
