Congress Infighting Erupts In Patan Over SC Morcha Appointment

| Updated: December 30, 2025 18:38

Discontent against Congress MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani, has come out in the open once again, with party workers and leaders openly protesting against him in Patan.

Angry party workers raised slogans against Mevani and even locked the Patan Congress office, alleging that key appointments are being made at his behest while ignoring local workers and MLAs.

Once again, factionalism in the Congress has reached its peak. Congress’s own MLAs and workers have formed a front against Jignesh Mevani following the repeated appointment of the District Scheduled Caste Morcha president in Patan. The protest intensified on Monday when angry workers shut the Congress office and voiced their opposition through slogans.

Jayaben Shah has been appointed as the President of the Patan District Scheduled Caste Front. This appointment has triggered widespread displeasure among local workers, who allege that the party leadership is repeatedly ignoring grassroots workers and allotting posts only to selected individuals.

According to the workers, representations were made to Congress state president Amit Chavda as well as the state president of the Scheduled Caste Morcha. However, when no solution emerged, opposition within the party grew stronger. Internal disputes over the appointment escalated to such an extent that workers were compelled to close the Congress office in protest.

The protesting workers alleged that the appointment of the District Scheduled Castes Front president was carried out at the behest of Jignesh Mevani. They further claimed that Mevani is attempting to control the entire Gujarat Congress by influencing organizational appointments.

Patan MLA Kirit Patel has also expressed strong anger over the issue. He stated that factionalism is breaking the trust of the people in the Congress. Patel warned that if this situation continues and party leaders fail to improve, the future of the Congress in the 2027 assembly elections will be dark.

Speaking specifically about the appointment of the District Scheduled Castes Front president, Patel said that even MLAs are not taken into confidence. He alleged that individuals who had tried to defeat him were instead rewarded with organizational posts. Despite the matter being raised with state leaders for over a month, no concrete action has been taken so far, he added, claiming that only false assurances have been given.

Patel further warned that if the regional leadership does not take the Patan issue seriously, similar situations could arise in other cities across the state.

In fact, there was a grapevine that Patel would resign from the post of the party’s whip in the state assembly. However, till the time of uploading this article, no such step has been taken by him and the party leaders have reportedly convinced him for not resigning.
