Indians Travelling to Phu Quoc Face Visa Limits, Passport Risks: Advisory Issued

| Updated: April 7, 2026 11:20

Indian travellers planning a trip to Vietnam’s popular island destination Phu Quoc have been cautioned about strict visa rules and potential complications arising from passport loss, according to a recent advisory issued by the Embassy of India in Vietnam.

The advisory highlights that while Phu Quoc offers visa-free entry to certain foreign nationals, including Indians, the exemption is highly restricted. Travellers entering under this provision are allowed to stay only on the island and cannot travel to mainland Vietnam without obtaining a valid visa in advance.

This means that Indian visitors cannot visit major cities such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City unless they have secured the appropriate Vietnamese visa prior to travel.

The Embassy warned that such limitations could create serious challenges in unforeseen situations. In cases of medical emergencies, flight disruptions, or other urgent needs requiring travel off the island, those without a mainland visa may face movement restrictions, delays in accessing healthcare, and immigration-related hurdles.

In view of these risks, Indian nationals have been strongly advised to obtain a valid Vietnam visa before travelling, even if their itinerary is limited to Phu Quoc. Those choosing to rely solely on visa-free entry have been urged to be prepared for possible complications.

The advisory also flags a second major concern — loss of passports during travel. Indian nationals who lose their passports in Vietnam must immediately file a police complaint in the local jurisdiction and submit the report to the Embassy in Hanoi or the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

While Indian authorities typically issue Emergency Certificates or temporary travel documents promptly—often on the same day—travellers must still obtain an exit permit from Vietnamese authorities before leaving the country. This process generally takes three to five working days and may extend further in some cases.

During this period, travellers are required to remain in Vietnam until all clearances are secured, potentially disrupting travel plans.

The advisory underscores the importance of preparation and documentation, especially as Phu Quoc continues to attract Indian tourists with its visa-free access and growing popularity as a beach destination.
