Vijay Knocks on Raj Bhavan Door as TVK Eyes Power After Stunning Debut

| Updated: May 5, 2026 13:34

The morning after a political earthquake in Tamil Nadu, Vijay moved swiftly from celebration to calculation.

His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, had done the unthinkable—emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats in its very first electoral outing. But victory came with a caveat. The magic number—118—remained just out of reach.

By early hours, the focus had shifted to Raj Bhavan. TVK reached out seeking an appointment with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, signalling its intent to stake claim to form the government.

Inside party circles, the mood was upbeat but measured. Vijay was scheduled to meet his newly elected MLAs—many of them first-time legislators—at the party office. The message was clear: the mandate may be incomplete, but the moment was historic.

Across the political spectrum, equations were already shifting.

The once-dominant Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, led by M. K. Stalin, found itself reduced to 59 seats. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam followed with 47. Smaller players held the key—Congress with five, Pattali Makkal Katchi with four.

And suddenly, numbers mattered more than narratives.

Quiet conversations began. Channels opened. The Congress and PMK, sources indicated, were not averse to supporting a TVK-led government—at a price. Ministerial berths were part of the discussion. The Left parties remained cautious, consulting internally. Others, like Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, chose to wait and watch.

For Vijay, this was unfamiliar terrain—but not entirely. Years of commanding mass appeal had brought him here. Now came the harder part: converting momentum into majority.

The road to Fort St. George was no longer a dream. It was a negotiation.

And Tamil Nadu waited—to see if its new “Nayagan” could script the final act.
