33 Years On, Verdict in 1993 Gujarat Arms Case: 12 Convicted, 17 Acquitted

In a case that has spanned more than three decades, a special court under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) in Jamnagar has convicted 12 individuals in the 1993 arms landing case linked to underworld figure Dawood Ibrahim. The court also acquitted 17 others after a full trial.

The verdict was delivered by Special TADA Judge R.P. Mogera, who sentenced 10 of the convicted accused to five years of rigorous imprisonment, while two others were awarded seven-year terms. Special public prosecutor Tushar Gokani confirmed the sentencing details.

The case traces its origins to the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition, which investigators say triggered a wider conspiracy. According to the prosecution, Dawood Ibrahim—later designated an international terrorist—along with associates operating from Dubai and Pakistan, planned to smuggle a large cache of arms, explosives, and RDX into India as part of a retaliatory design.

The illegal consignment was allegedly brought in through the Gujarat coast in 1993. Following this, an FIR was registered at the Jamnagar B-division police station in July that year, setting in motion one of the state’s longest-running criminal investigations.

The probe extended from 1993 to 2018 and involved multiple agencies and senior officers. Over the course of the investigation, 46 individuals were arrested, while 15 others—including Tiger Memon and Anees Ibrahim—were declared absconding and remain at large.

The trial began in 2018, with seven charge sheets filed against the accused over time. Investigators pieced together evidence over decades, examining smuggling routes, financial links, and alleged connections to international networks.

Officials said the case was handled at different stages by senior police officers and later overseen at higher levels, reflecting its complexity and national security implications.

The court’s judgment, delivered nearly 33 years after the initial FIR, marks a significant development in a case that has seen prolonged investigation and legal proceedings. However, with several key accused still absconding, the case remains only partially resolved.
