A video recorded inside the lock-up of Shaherkotda Police Station in Ahmedabad has gone viral on social media, raising serious questions about police procedures and the treatment of detainees. The clip appears to show a man inside the lock-up using abusive language, singing, and even consuming what looks like a pill.
Following the circulation of the video, Ahmedabad Police have ordered an internal inquiry to determine how the footage was recorded and whether there was any negligence or violation of lock-up protocols.
Who Is the Man Seen in the Video?
According to local police, the man seen in the viral video has been identified as Shahid Ansari, a resident of Gomtipur. Police said Ansari has a history of being detained under preventive action on multiple occasions.
Officials stated that the incident shown in the video took place around a month ago when Ansari was being held in the Shaherkotda police lock-up as part of preventive detention.
What Does the Viral Video Show?
In the video, Ansari can reportedly be seen speaking casually while sitting inside the lock-up. He is heard using abusive language, talking about ordering food, singing songs, and allegedly consuming a medicine or pill during the recording.
The footage quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing public attention and prompting questions about security inside the police station.
Police Explain How the Video Was Recorded
Inspector V. N. Chaudhary said that the video was not recorded using a mobile phone inside the lock-up, as mobile phones are not allowed in the detention area.
According to the police, another man was present outside the lock-up at the time of the incident. Officials identified him as a student from a premier institute in Gandhinagar. Police said the student had been traced after his parents reported him missing.
Investigators believe that Ansari allegedly requested the student to record a video of him while he was consuming medicine. The student is believed to have recorded the footage from outside the lock-up and later shared it with Ansari.
Police said the video eventually surfaced on social media on Tuesday, leading to widespread circulation and public scrutiny.
Inquiry Underway
Authorities have now launched an internal investigation to establish exactly how the video reached the public and whether anyone violated police procedures.
Officials said the inquiry will examine:
How the video was recorded.
How it was shared and later uploaded to social media.
Whether any police personnel failed to follow standard lock-up security procedures.
Whether there was any lapse in supervision while the detainee was in custody.
Action Will Be Taken if Lapses Are Found
Police have assured that the inquiry will be conducted thoroughly. If the investigation finds any procedural lapses or negligence on the part of police personnel, appropriate departmental action will be taken against those responsible.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over security and monitoring inside police lock-ups. The findings of the internal inquiry are expected to clarify the sequence of events and determine whether existing lock-up protocols were breached.
