A 13-year-old Class 7 student in Gujarat’s Surat allegedly died by suicide on Monday after his parents asked him to stop using a mobile phone and complete his homework. According to the police, the boy was reportedly addicted to playing video games on his smartphone.
The tragic incident has left the family and local community in shock. Police have registered an accidental death case and started an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Parents Asked Him to Finish Homework
According to the police, the boy’s father, Amarsingh Nishad, found his son deeply engrossed in playing games on a smartphone at their home. He repeatedly asked the child to put the phone aside and complete his pending homework.
When the boy continued playing despite being told several times, his father scolded him. Following this, the boy handed the phone to his mother without saying much and went into another room, where he locked the door from inside.
Family Found Him Unresponsive
After some time, the family prepared for dinner. When Amarsingh Nishad went to call his son for the meal, there was no response from inside the room despite repeated knocks on the door.
Growing worried, he sought help from neighbours. Together, they forced open the locked door and found the boy hanging inside the room.
The family immediately rushed him to New Civil Hospital in Surat. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Boy Was the Only Child of the Family
Chowk Bazaar Assistant Sub-Inspector Yutika Kaushik said the boy was the only child of the couple and shared a close bond with his mother.
She said the student was studying in Class 7 at a Surat Municipal Corporation-run school on Ved Road. According to his parents, they had received complaints from the school that their son was irregular in completing his homework.
Police also said the child was reportedly addicted to playing video games on his mobile phone, and this appeared to be one of the issues that had led to frequent concerns at home.
Family Has Been Living in Surat for a Decade
The boy’s father, originally from Odisha, works in a powerloom factory on Ved Road. The family has been living in Surat for the past 10 years.
Neighbours described the family as quiet, and the incident has come as a shock to those living in the area.
Police Investigation Underway
After receiving information about the incident, officers from Chowk Bazaar Police Station reached the hospital and recorded the statements of the victim’s parents and neighbours.
Police have registered an accidental death case and are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the tragedy. Officials have said that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
