What was supposed to be a quiet after-dinner walk on the terrace of a housing society turned into a terrifying ordeal for a 23-year-old design student in Ahmedabad. Police said the woman was attacked by a newly appointed security guard, who used a wire to strangle her and sexually assaulted her after she lost consciousness.
The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Saturday, August 8, at a five-storey housing society in the Anandnagar area. The accused, identified as Dharam Singh, has been arrested, police said.
Woman Attacked on Terrace
According to police, the woman, who lives in a rented flat with three other women, had gone to the terrace for a walk after dinner.
While she was walking on the rooftop, Singh approached her from behind and wrapped a wire around her neck. Police said the wire restricted her breathing and caused her to lose consciousness.
The accused raped the woman after she lost consciousness. After the assault, Singh reportedly left the terrace and bolted the door from the outside, leaving the woman trapped.
Woman Raised Alarm After Regaining Consciousness
The woman regained consciousness and began shouting for help.
Her cries were heard by residents living on the fifth floor of the building. They opened the terrace door and helped her.
Police were informed shortly afterwards, and an FIR was registered in connection with the incident. The incident prompted an immediate investigation, with police teams beginning efforts to identify and locate the accused.
Ten Police Teams Formed to Trace Accused
Ahmedabad Police formed 10 teams from different police stations to investigate the case and trace Singh.
Investigators examined CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the housing society. By tracking the accused’s movements through the footage and other investigation, police located him near Hebatpur in Thaltej. Singh was subsequently arrested.
Police said his medical examination has been completed and he is being questioned as part of the investigation.
Accused Had Joined Society Four Days Earlier
Police said Singh had started working as a security guard at the housing society only four days before the alleged incident.
Before joining the society, he had worked as a security guard at another residential apartment complex in Ahmedabad.
Investigators are now examining the sequence of events and collecting evidence, including CCTV footage and other material related to the case.
Student Pursuing Higher Education in Design
Police said the survivor is pursuing a higher education degree in design and had been living in the rented apartment with three other women.
The incident has also raised concerns about women’s safety in residential societies, particularly in common areas such as terraces and other less crowded parts of housing complexes.
