India’s ambitious plan to build a home-grown fifth-generation fighter jet has received a major boost, with Reliance Industries and British aerospace company Rolls-Royce announcing a partnership to explore the development of an engine for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The proposed partnership could mark an important step in India’s long-term effort to develop its own advanced fighter aircraft engine — an area where the country has traditionally depended heavily on foreign technology.
The two companies plan to explore setting up an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India, which could eventually cover everything from engine design and development to manufacturing, testing, production and long-term maintenance.
Why the Fighter Engine Matters
Building a modern fighter aircraft is not only about designing the airframe, weapons or stealth features. The engine is one of its most complex and critical components.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic also described the proposed collaboration as an important step towards developing a stronger and more self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in India.
More Than Just the AMCA Engine
The proposed complex could eventually be used for projects beyond the AMCA programme.
According to the companies, the facility could support future work in defence aerospace, civil aviation and newer power and propulsion technologies.
That means the proposed project could potentially develop into a broader aerospace manufacturing and technology centre rather than remaining limited to a single fighter engine.
