A second student death by suicide in just six days at Marwadi University has raised fresh concerns among students, with several of them gathering at the Civil Hospital on Friday after the latest incident.
A 20-year-old third-year BTech Computer Engineering student died after allegedly jumping from the university’s main building on the Rajkot-Morbi Highway. The student, who was from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, was rushed to the Civil Hospital in critical condition but was declared dead on arrival.
Student left class before the incident
According to police, the student’s class had started around 7:30 am on Friday. He later left the classroom, telling others that he was going to the washroom.
Police said he took a lift from the third floor to the sixth floor of the main building before allegedly jumping from there.
The Kuwadva Road police have registered an accidental death report and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Second death in less than a week
The latest incident comes only six days after the death of a 19-year-old Computer Engineering student from Andhra Pradesh, who allegedly jumped from the 10th floor of the university’s women’s hostel on September 19.
Following that case, police recorded statements from around 20 students as part of their inquiry.
Police have said they have not found any connection between the two deaths and have also not found evidence of ragging or harassment on the campus.
The university had also seen another reported case in January 2025, when an 18-year-old Computer Engineering student died by suicide in the boys’ hostel.
Questions and concerns grow among students
While the police inquiry has not established a link between the recent deaths, the incidents have triggered concern among students.
Posts circulating on social media have raised questions about the pressure faced by students who live away from their families. One student, speaking outside the university, claimed that students who come from distant parts of the country may sometimes have limited support when they are dealing with personal problems.
The same student also alleged that the latest victim had been under mental stress and had been rebuked by a teacher a day before the incident. These claims have not been independently established and are not part of the police findings currently reported.
Protest outside university gate
Following Friday’s death, ABVP workers held a protest outside the university gates, raising concerns about student safety and the steps taken by the university after the earlier incident.
The organisation alleged that assurances given by the university after the previous death had not been followed by sufficient action.
These are allegations made during the protest and have not been established as findings of the police investigation.
For now, however, the immediate police investigation remains focused on the circumstances surrounding the latest death at Marwadi University. While students and political groups have raised several questions, police have so far said they found no evidence of ragging or harassment and no confirmed connection between the two recent deaths.
