In a significant step towards modernising football analysis and talent identification in Gujarat, the Gujarat State Football Association (GSFA) launched a data-driven sports intelligence initiative during the third season of the Gujarat Super League (GSL). Implemented in collaboration with Germany-based Bosch-Evoco Sports Intelligence, the initiative aimed to identify and develop grassroots football talent through high-accuracy video analytics, player behaviour and performance tracking, and expert-validated Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The third season of the GSL matches was held at EKA Arena TransStadia in Ahmedabad in September 2026.
This project marked the first-ever global use of the Bosch-Evoco Sports Intelligence framework for evaluating football players’ talent. Led by the GSFA, the initiative represented a strategic shift from traditional scouting methods, which mainly rely on match results and individual observations, towards a more comprehensive and evidence-based approach. During the third season of the GSL, the initiative analysed all 16 matches involving 133 players from six franchise teams. These teams were Saurashtra Spartans, Vadodara Warriors, Gandhinagar Giants, Ahmedabad Avengers, Surat Strikers and Karnavati Knights.
Using advanced dynamic video tracking validated by international sports scientists, the Evoco system evaluated players across physical, technical, cognitive, behavioural and developmental aspects. These experts included Prof. Dr. Jan Mayer, former head of TSG Hoffenheim and a sports scientist.
Based on detailed profiles of 133 players, the system recorded more than 1,719 KPI observations. These included key parameters such as: (i) Performance under Pressure (PuP) – a player’s ability to make tactical decisions and remain mentally composed in high-pressure match situations; (ii) Error Recovery Time (ERT) – a player’s behavioural resilience and emotional response after making a mistake on the field; and (iii) Direct Duels – a player’s technical and physical effectiveness in one-on-one contests against opponents.
The main objective of the GSFA initiative was to overcome the limitations of traditional scouting, which is largely based on scoreboards and match results. The sports intelligence data showed that a team’s position in the tournament does not always reflect the true quality of individual players. For example, although Saurashtra Spartans won the tournament title, the individual performance analysis showed that Vadodara Warriors recorded an overall success rate of 66.3 per cent, higher than Saurashtra’s 63.1 per cent. These performance indicators helped the GSFA identify outstanding players from lower-ranked teams whose individual contributions might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
The most immediate outcome of the GSFA initiative is the selection of two Under-20 players for advanced training at a club in Germany. Arihant Rajpurohit of Gandhinagar Giants ranked first among the Under-20 players. He recorded an overall success rate of 82.4 per cent, a Stability Index of 31.59 and an 87.5 per cent success rate in direct duels. Ashish Rana of Saurashtra Spartans delivered consistent performances across matches. He recorded an overall success rate of 70 per cent, a Stability Index of 46.4 and made positive contributions in five of the six matches under observation. Arrangements for their training in Germany and the necessary formalities are being finalised.
Through this partnership, the GSFA has set a new benchmark for modern sports administration in India. Well-known football thinker Mr. Kaushik Moulik played an active role in bringing the GSFA and Bosch-Evoco together. The GSFA–Bosch-Evoco project has demonstrated that data-driven intelligence can strengthen grassroots talent identification and help promising players receive coaching tailored to their needs, along with international exposure, beyond what their teams’ match results alone may indicate.
