Adani Power Lights The Way With VIPL Acquisition

| Updated: July 8, 2025 16:13

A “key milestone” was the words CEO SB Khyalia used to describe Adani Power Ltd’s (APL) acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd. (VIPL), a 2×300 MW domestic coal-fired power plant in Butibori, Nagpur.

As the latest acquisition proves, Adani Power Ltd stays committed to providing cost-effective power, helping India in its wider energy objectives.

“The acquisition of VIPL is a key milestone in Adani Power’s strategy to unlock value through the turnaround of stressed assets. As we continue expanding our portfolio, we remain committed to supporting India’s vision of ‘Electricity for All’ by delivering reliable, affordable base-load power that fuels the country’s sustainable growth,” SB Khyalia was quoted as saying.

Capturing the spirit behind Adani Power’s latest strides in India’s energy transformation, Gautam Adani, the group’s chairman said, “In our actions sit the promises we make. Promises to light up lives, to power dreams where darkness once lived, and to bring the sun home to every village. The rays of change are here. Hum Karke Dikhate Hain!”

Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd. (VIPL) had been going through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). It falls under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), essentially a government framework that supports financially troubled companies to find a way to recover or be taken over by new owners.

On June 18, 2025, the Mumbai Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved APL’s resolution plan. The implementation was completed on July 7, 2025, with the total transaction valued at Rs 4,000 crore.

APL’s operating capacity, with the latest acquisition, rises to 18,150 MW, further cementing the group’s standing as India’s ever-reliable producer of private thermal power. According to reports, the company is now targeting further capacity growth through an aggressive mix of brownfield and greenfield projects.

Vibes of India understands that six brownfield Ultra-supercritical Thermal Power Plants (USCTPPs) of 1,600 MW each are under construction at existing APL sites in Singrauli-Mahan (Madhya Pradesh), Raipur, Raigarh, and Korba (Chhattisgarh), and Kawai (Rajasthan). Simultaneously, APL is developing a 1,600 MW greenfield USCTPP at Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh.

Consolidating its leadership in India’s base-load power sector, the group is also reviving construction of a previously acquired 1,320 MW Supercritical power plant at Korba. Together, these projects position APL to achieve an operational capacity of 30,670 MW by 2030.

Adani Power was also among four private power companies that showed interest in setting up a 2400 MW thermal power plant at Bhagalpur’s Pirpainti in Bihar. JSW Energy, Torrent Power and Bajaj Group’s Lalit Power are the others. The firms submitted their applications following the bidding process initiated by BSPGCL, Patna. In January, the Adani Group announced a planned investment of Rs 60,000 crore to expand its power plants in Raipur, Korba, and Raigarh.

Meanwhile, Adani Power Limited’s stock, with a market capitalisation of Rs 2,30,066 crores rose to Rs 615. At the time of this article going live, it hit an intraday high of up to 3 per cent from its previous closing price of Rs 597.15. The company reported revenue of Rs 14,237 crore in Q4FY25, according to a business portal. It went up by 6.5  per cent compared to Rs 13,364 crore in Q4FY24 and up 4.14per cent QoQ from Rs 13,671 crore in Q3FY25.
