Ahmedabad Clash After Man Forces Muslim Family To Chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’

| Updated: March 3, 2026 16:08

Tension flared in Ahmedabad’s Kagadapith locality in the early hours of Sunday after a dispute between a man on a motorcycle and a Muslim family escalated into mob violence outside a police station.

According to police officials, the episode began around 1 am when Rajdeep Samanta, who was riding a Bullet motorcycle, allegedly stopped a Muslim family returning home from a wedding function.

An argument reportedly broke out, during which Samanta is accused of making objectionable remarks and insisting that the family chant “Jai Shri Ram.” Authorities say the comments hurt religious sentiments.

The family left the spot and later informed members of their community about the confrontation. Soon after, a group of people gathered in the area and confronted Samanta.

A night patrol team reached the location and intervened, escorting Samanta to a nearby police station to prevent further escalation. However, several members of the crowd followed the police vehicle to the station premises.

Police said that as officers attempted to move Samanta from the vehicle, some in the crowd allegedly issued threats and the situation quickly turned violent. Despite calling for additional reinforcement, officers faced an aggressive mob. In the ensuing scuffle, Samanta and one police constable sustained injuries. Police eventually managed to secure Samanta inside the station and bring the situation under control.

Ahmedabad Deputy Commissioner of Police confirmed that two separate FIRs have been registered. One case has been filed against approximately 75 unidentified individuals for attempt to murder and rioting. Seven people — Sahil Saiyed, Samir Sheikh, Riyaz Chavda, Gulam Kasam, Firoz Sattar, Mahij and Aslam — have been named in the complaint. Four of them have been arrested so far, while further investigation is ongoing.

A separate FIR has also been lodged against Samanta for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and misbehaving with a woman from the family. He has been taken into custody.

Police said they are continuing to probe the incident and reviewing evidence to determine the sequence of events that led to the violence.
