Amit Chavda Appointed GPCC President, Tushar Chaudhary Leader Of Opposition

| Updated: July 17, 2025 18:33

The All India Congress Committee on Thursday appointed opposition leader in the Gujarat state assembly, Amit Chavda, as the party’s president in the state.

Chavda, MLA from Anklav, succeeds Shaktsinh Gohil, who resigned last month taking “moral responsibility” for the party’s loss in by-elections on Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats.

Dr. Tushar Chaudhary, MLA from Khedbrahma in North Gujarat, has been made leader of the opposition in the state assembly.

This is for the second time that Chavda has been appointed Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president. The 49-year-old OBC leader was the state party president from 2018-21.

Chaudhary, a tribal leader, is the son of former chief minister of Gujarat Late Amarsinh Chaudhary.

The duo faces an uphill task to reignite the party workers ahead of the municipal corporation elections that are expected to be held by the end of the year. The state assembly elections will be held in 2027.

A media release signed by AICC general secretary, K. C. Venugopal, also states that the party appreciates the contribution of outgoing GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil. He is the incumbent Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.

While resigning he had given charge to Shailesh Parmar, party MLA from Danilimda in Ahmedabad. This was a stopgap arrangement till the new appointment was made.
