Ashok Chaudhary Is New Chairman Of GCMMF, Gordhan Dhameliya Is Vice Chairman

| Updated: July 22, 2025 13:47

Ashok Chaudhary, Chairman of Dudhsagar Dairy (Mehsana), has been unanimously elected chairman of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) and Gordhan Dhameliya, Chairman of Rajkot District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd., as Vice Chairman. GCMMF markets dairy products under the brand name Amul.

The elections took place in Anand, the milk capital of India, on Tuesday.

The elections followed the completion of the two-and-a-half-year term of outgoing Chairman Shamal Patel and Vice Chairman Valamji Humbal. The chairman and the deputy are elected by the chairpersons of the Federation’s 18-member dairy unions across Gujarat, along with the Federation’s Managing Director and the District Registrar. The voting power of each union is determined by its annual turnover. However, since its inception, the federation has always chosen its leadership unanimously without the need for an actual vote.

GCMMF, whose annual turnover has crossed ₹90,000 crore, continues its tradition of unanimous selection rather than contested elections. This time as well only one nomination was received for each post.

Since its formation in 1973, the GCMMF was led by its founder chairman, the late Dr Verghese Kurien, who held the position until stepping down in 2006. Thereafter, the post has rotated among leaders from Gujarat’s major dairies: Parthi Bhatol (Banas Dairy), Vipul Chaudhary (Dudhsagar Dairy, Mehsana), Jetha Patel and later Shamal Patel (Sabar Dairy), and Ramsinh Parmar (Amul Dairy, Anand). Banas, Mehsana, Sabar, and Amul are Gujarat’s four largest milk unions.

The post of vice chairman was created in 2015 following amendments to GCMMF’s bylaws. The position was first held by Jetha Bharwad, Chairman of Panchmahals-based Panchamrut Dairy, and later by Humbal.
