Assam BJP Video Featuring CM With Rifle Sparks Opposition Outrage, Post Deleted

| Updated: February 9, 2026 17:08

A controversial video shared by the Assam BJP on social media, depicting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aiming a rifle at two men in skullcaps — one resembling Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi — has triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties, forcing the ruling party to remove the post from X.

The clip was uploaded on Saturday with the caption “Point blank shot”. It showed an image of Sarma firing at a photograph of two men, and concluded with a stylised visual of the Chief Minister dressed like a cowboy holding a gun. The video carried provocative slogans such as “No mercy to Bangladeshis”, “Why did you go to Pakistan?” and “Foreigner-free Assam.”

The Congress condemned the video, calling it deeply disturbing and accusing the BJP of promoting violence. In a statement, the party said the post appeared to glorify the “targeted, point-blank murder of minorities” and described it as “a call to mass violence and genocide.” Congress demanded strict action, arguing that such content could not be dismissed as mere trolling and warning that it was spreading poison and disharmony in society.

The party also urged judicial intervention, saying it had little expectation of accountability from the Prime Minister in such matters.

According to media reports, by Sunday, the video had been deleted from the Assam BJP’s official handle. However, party spokespersons refused to explain the decision. “There is no comment. It has been deleted, there is nothing to say,” said spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarma.

Assam BJP’s social media convener Biswajit Khound, 33, also declined to comment on why the post was taken down. He noted that the party’s social media team includes four co-conveners, around 20 members at the state level, and district-level teams across Assam.

This is not the first time the Assam BJP’s social media activity has come under scrutiny. In September last year, the same X handle — followed by more than two lakh users — posted an AI-generated video titled “Assam without BJP.” That clip showed images of men in skullcaps and women in burkhas in public spaces, alongside captions referencing “beef legalization” and “illegal immigrants.”

The video sparked legal action, and the Supreme Court issued notice on a plea seeking its removal. At the time, Khound defended the party’s online strategy, stating that content was produced internally and tailored differently across platforms, with more aggressive messaging on Twitter.

Saturday’s video has now drawn strong reactions from multiple opposition parties. The All India Trinamool Congress described it as “a green signal for genocide and mass murder,” accusing the BJP of dragging political discourse to dangerous levels and normalising hate. The party called for immediate criminal action and urged the Election Commission to take cognisance of what it termed open incitement against minorities.

The CPI(M) echoed similar concerns, calling the post an “open call for ethnic cleansing and genocide.” The Left party alleged that the BJP and the Chief Minister were using the narrative of “infiltrators” to provoke communal tension and demanded strict action before the situation escalates further.
