Women’s safety remains a serious issue in India, even in state-run setups meant to offer protection. When assaults happen during official events and in spaces like ambulances, it shows how deep the failure runs.
A case in point is a horrifying episode of a 26-year-old woman who was allegedly gang-raped in a moving ambulance while being transported to a hospital after collapsing during a physical endurance test.
The incident reportedly took place on Thursday during a recruitment drive at the Bihar Military Police grounds in Bodh Gaya.
According to reports, the test was part of the Home Guard recruitment drive in Bihar’s Gaya district.
The woman collapsed while undergoing a standard physical test required for selection. CCTV footage has verified the path taken by the ambulance and its timing.
Reports mentioned that the event organisers made arrangements for her to be evacuated immediately by a stationed ambulance.
According to her police complaint, she lost consciousness during the test and was only partially aware of what transpired inside the ambulance. She later informed police and hospital authorities that three to four men raped her inside the vehicle.
Following her statement, an FIR was registered at the Bodh Gaya police station.
Swift action followed. An SIT and forensic team were dispatched to investigate the matter.
Vinay Kumar, the ambulance driver, and Ajit Kumar, the onboard technician, were arrested and are being interrogated.
Meanwhile, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Chirag Paswan flayed the state government. He criticised the breakdown of law and order in Bihar and raised doubts over the police’s efficiency.
