Returning to India under heavy scrutiny, Anmol Bishnoi — long linked to several high-profile crime cases — was deported from the US and immediately taken into NIA custody.
Accused in the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique and connected to the firing outside actor Salman Khan’s residence, he was brought to Delhi’s Patiala House court soon after his formal arrest.
According to reports, the agencies are concentrating on his alleged involvement in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022, the killing of NCP leader Baba Siddique in 2024, and the firing outside Salman Khan’s Mumbai home. Moose Wala, alias Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, was shot dead while travelling in his car in Mansa, while Siddique (66) was gunned down by three assailants outside his MLA son’s office. Siddique was allegedly targeted because of his closeness to Salman Khan, against whom the Bishnoi gang reportedly holds a grudge due to the actor’s alleged role in the killing of a black buck in Rajasthan.
Anmol, originally from Fazilka in Punjab, is among 200 Indian nationals being sent back by the US, including two fugitives wanted in Punjab. He faces around 18 pending cases across the country. Investigators suspect he fled on a fake passport after Moose Wala’s killing in 2022. His arrest in the US last year brought an end to his run, and a court there rejected his asylum plea last week. He had been arrested for allegedly travelling with fake documents.
India formally sought his extradition in January last year after the NIA filed a chargesheet against him in 2023. According to the NIA, he aided another wanted gangster, Goldy Brar, and Lawrence Bishnoi in terror-related activities between 2020 and 2023. The NIA also announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh.
While in the US, Anmol was reportedly overseeing key operations for Lawrence, arranging hideouts, weapons and logistical support for gang operatives. Investigators stated that he also continued running an extortion racket from abroad.
