BJP MLA Amit Thaker’s Nephew Named In Abetment To Suicide Case In Gujarat

| Updated: December 3, 2025 12:32

In an embarrassment for the Gujarat BJP, Vasna Police have registered an FIR for abetment to suicide and offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against six persons, including the nephew of BJP MLA Amit Thaker.

This follows the death of 30-year-old Ankit Solanki.

The FIR was filed on Monday by Kunal Solanki, elder brother of the deceased. Kunal alleged that the accused mentally harassed Ankit for weeks and threatened to shut down the family’s shop.

ACP, SC/ST Cell, Roshni Solanki told a section of the media that one of the six accused, Neel Thaker, is the nephew of BJP MLA Amit Thaker, and all the accused are absconding.

Fifty-four-year old Amit is a first time MLA and represents Vejalpur constituency. He is considered close to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Vejalpur also falls under Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency represented by Shah.

So far, there has been no word from Amit Thaker on the issue.

The FIR mentions that Ankit and his brother jointly ran Gujubhai Pan Palace at Shyamal Crossroads in Ahmedabad. The complaint further mentions that the accused had frequent altercations with Ankit over a previous dispute involving a relative.

Recently, the accused were booked in a case of prohibition in which the location of the offence was mentioned as the pan shop, leading to frequent altercations between Ankit and the accused.

In the FIR, Kunal has stated that these boys wanted to shut down their shop and threatened to use the media to spoil their father’s reputation.” According to him, Ankit was mentally disturbed due to the harassment.

Ankit had allegedly called his father and brother near Kankavati flats crossroads and told them he feared that the accused would frame him in a liquor case and shut the shop.

The same day, one of the accused allegedly showed Kunal a message purportedly written by Ankit before his death.

The message, which is part of the FIR, says the accused “made life unbearable”, mentally tortured him, and that he “could no longer endure it”.

Kunal rushed home only to find Kunal hanging from the ceiling fan.

All six accused — Raj Sukhvasiya, Manav Thakkar, Mihir Desai, Utang Desai, Tirth Pradhan, and Neel Thaker — who have been book are at large.
