Attorney General Pam Bondi was barely out the door when the next name started circulating. Kash Patel, director of the FBI, may not last the day.
That was the word coming out of Washington on Thursday. Another day, another firing, another name thrown into the void. It has become the rhythm of the Donald Trump administration: move fast, give no warning, explain little.
Former FBI agent Kyle Seraphin went on Alex Jones’ radio show and reportedly cited two sources to say Trump was likely to make a decision on Patel the same day. He said there was a decent possibility that Patel would be fired and a total reshuffle would follow. He added that Trump appeared to want the move to look like his own decision rather than one made under pressure.
Trump announced Bondi’s departure on Truth Social. He said he loved Pam and that she would be moving to a new role in the private sector, to be announced later. Her replacement, he said, would be Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, a former personal lawyer to the president.
Blanche responded on social media, saying Bondi had led the department with strength and conviction. He said the department would continue backing law enforcement and keeping America safe.
Reports also emerged that Trump had discussed EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin as a longer-term replacement for Bondi. Separately, the firing of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was also said to be under discussion.
Amid the upheaval, three former FBI agents filed a federal lawsuit seeking to reclaim their jobs. Michelle Ball, Jamie Garman and Blaire Toleman (fired between October and November last year) said they were illegally dismissed as part of a retribution campaign targeting agents involved in the investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss.
The three had between eight and 14 years of service at the bureau, which the lawsuit described as exemplary and unblemished. They said they were let go without cause and without being given a chance to respond.
The case adds to a growing list of legal challenges against a broader purge led by Patel, which has resulted in the removal of dozens of agents over the past year, either for their roles in Trump-related investigations or for being seen as insufficiently loyal to the president.
