Alarming figures related to heart health have surfaced, highlighting a steep and concerning rise in cardiac emergencies in Gujarat.
A report that will be of deep concern to the state claims that in 2018, EMRI 108 emergency services responded to 51,315 cardiac emergencies over the course of 365 days, averaging 141 cases daily.
By September 25 this year, this number has surged to 62,044, with a daily average of 232 cases, a 65% increase.
The situation in Ahmedabad city is grimmer. Statistics from EMRI 108 show that the number of daily cardiac cases has risen by 71%, from 38 cases per day in 2018 to 65 in 2025.
Age-wise analysis of the emergencies over the past eight years indicates that individuals aged up to 40 years have consistently accounted for 28% to 33% of total cardiac emergencies.
The proportion was at its highest in 2019, reaching 33%, or roughly one in every three cases. In 2020, this age group represented 27.8% of cases. So far in 2025, they make up around 30% of the total.
According to EMRI experts, beyond the rise in absolute numbers, these figures should also be viewed in the context of increased awareness, particularly after 2023, when several incidents of sudden deaths were reported.
Medical practitioners have pointed out that more of such cases are reported in smaller towns. These are being reported earlier than before, often after symptoms like chest pain or discomfort.
The report, citing data from one official, shared that 2024 saw the highest number of cardiac emergencies in Gujarat, 72,586 cases in one year.
What’s scary is that the average age of the attacks has come down by almost 10 years. the condition of young patients’ hearts often appears significantly older than their biological age when clinical parameters are examined.
They attributed it to poor lifestyles, stress, a lack of physical activity and consumption of outside food that has gone up significantly in the last 10 years.
Doctors are now focusing not just on avoiding risks but also on building strength early in life.
The data is timely, as World Heart Day on September 29 promotes heart health. This year’s theme, Don’t Miss a Beat, calls for early detection of cardiac arrests and steps to prevent it.
