Congress Well-Positioned To Win Upcoming Elections in Gujarat, Says Kharge

| Updated: September 10, 2025 16:59

The Congress Party signaled a renewed confidence in its Gujarat strategy on Wednesday as it kicked off the second phase of its Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan with a ten-day training programme for district presidents and office-bearers in Junagadh.

Inaugurating the workshop, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party is well-positioned to win the upcoming elections in Gujarat. He alleged that a remote-control government has been operating in Gujarat since 2014, with key decisions being dictated from Delhi rather than the state itself.

He pointed out that the BJP has been in power in Gujarat for over two and a half decades but the ground reality has changed significantly. He claimed that the people of Gujarat have begun to see through the gaps in governance and want to realign with the Congress — a shift that was already evident in the 2017 elections, when the BJP failed to win a single seat in seven districts and saw its total seat count fall below 100 for the first time.

Kharge expressed confidence that this phase of training would give Congress fresh strength in Gujarat, with the view that strengthening district units would be crucial in driving a larger wave of political transformation.

The training initiative is part of a wider organisational drive launched after Congress declared 2025 as the year to build the organisation.

Gujarat was chosen to kick-start the Abhiyan.

The participants were made aware in detail about the roles played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru in the freedom struggle and later on in shaping the country.

Patel’s views on organisational strength were also recalled, particularly his belief that numerical strength was meaningless without unity and structure. Nehru’s conviction that every party must periodically reorient itself to match the pace of national developments was presented as a guiding principle for today’s Congress.

Kharge reiterated that the propagation of Congress ideology and direct connection with the people are key responsibilities of those participating in this training program. He further said  that the 10-day workshop would not only equip workers with knowledge but also shape their identity and open doors to greater responsibilities in the future.

Kharge also outlined the party’s ongoing fight — both in Parliament and on the streets — to protect the Constitution, safeguard democratic institutions, defend social harmony, and uphold the rights of the poor, farmers, laborers, and women.

The Congress president also focused on various yatras undertaken by party leader Rahul Gandhi and its impact.

In sharp criticism of the Union Government, Kharge said  the Nation once had two Gujaratis who fought for freedom and united the country, but that today, two Gujaratis are instead engaged in dividing it. The reference was a veiled attack on Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He also accused the Prime Minister of misleading the nation on the Chinese incursion by initially denying any intrusion while later visiting China himself.

Kharge also raised concerns about electoral manipulation, with references to voter list tampering in Bihar, and what Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda described as “vote theft” in Gujarat.

In Navsari’s Choriyasi seat — where the BJP state president won — a case of voter rigging reportedly came to light. From a verified sample of 40% of the six lakh voters, around 30,000 fake or duplicate names were allegedly found. The party also recalled irregularities in the Surat Lok Sabha constituency, and underlined the urgent need to identify and empower dedicated Congress workers who believe in the party’s ideology.

The leaders urged attendees to prepare for the road ahead with patience, discipline, and determination, promising organizational support at every level.

In the coming months, Congress will also launch national celebrations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel starting October 31, he said.

Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal also remained present.
