Cybercrime On Rise In Gujarat

| Updated: November 10, 2025 15:45

In just the first nine months of 2025, Gujarat has seen an alarming escalation in cybercrime — so much so that this alone accounts for nearly 30% of all cybercrime complaints registered since 2020.

The data paints a worrying picture of how digital crime is taking place in the state, with cybercriminals turning Gujarat into one of their most active hunting grounds.

According to report in an English national daily that quoted figures shared by the CID-Crime’s cyber cell, based on National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, over 1.49 lakh complaints of online fraud involving a staggering Rs. 1,011 crore were reported between January and September 2025.

This nine-month figure nearly surpasses the cumulative record of 1.38 lakh complaints and fraud worth Rs. 5,837 crore reported over the previous five years (2020–2024).

The report said that the officials at the Gujarat CID (Crime) attribute this dramatic spike to two major factors — growing public awareness about online scams and a rising tendency among victims to report incidents.

Their internal analysis shows a 165% increase in cyberfraud complaints over the past three years. Interestingly, despite the soaring number of cases, the average loss per victim has remained steady, showing only a marginal 1.3% rise. On average, a victim loses about Rs. 67,000 per incident, suggesting that while more people are being targeted, the fraud amounts have not drastically changed.

A disturbing trend has emerged with pensioners becoming frequent victims. Fraudsters often send them deceptive links claiming to help “update pension account details.” Once clicked, these links install malicious APK files that drain the victims’ accounts entirely.

Experts warn that cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, adapting quickly to new security measures. While major scams grab media attention, officials believe that countless smaller frauds go unreported, masking the true scale of cybercrime across Gujarat.
