A 27-year-old woman serving with the Delhi Police Special Cell’s elite SWAT unit died after a brutal assault at her home in New Delhi, allegedly at the hands of her husband, following a domestic dispute. The incident has sent shockwaves through police circles and reignited concerns over dowry-linked violence.
The victim, identified as Kajal, was reportedly attacked late on the night of January 22. Police say her husband, Ankur, allegedly struck her repeatedly during a violent outburst, including blows to the head with a dumbbell. Kajal, who was four months pregnant, suffered critical head injuries and never recovered.
According to media reports, her father, devastated by the loss, said his daughter and her unborn child both died as a result of the assault. He alleged that Kajal had been facing persistent abuse over dowry demands since shortly after her marriage. “My daughter was pregnant. Two lives are gone. This is not one crime, but two,” he said.
Investigators found bloodstains on the door frame inside the couple’s residence, along with a dumbbell believed to have been used in the attack. Based on preliminary findings, police suspect Kajal’s head was smashed against the door and struck multiple times, causing fatal trauma.
Following the assault, Ankur reportedly took Kajal to Tarak Hospital in Delhi’s Mohan Garden area. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to a private hospital in Ghaziabad, where she succumbed to her injuries on January 27.
Kajal’s family told police that the marriage had turned abusive within just two weeks. According to her brother and father, Ankur and his family allegedly began pressuring her for a car and additional money. Despite her demanding job and efforts to maintain the marriage, the abuse allegedly continued.
Kajal had completed her graduation in 2022, when she met Ankur, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana. Their friendship evolved into a relationship, and the two married a year later with the approval of both families. In 2023, Kajal earned selection into the Delhi Police SWAT team, while Ankur worked as a clerk with the Ministry of Defence. The couple relocated to Delhi in 2024.
On the night of the attack, Ankur allegedly called Kajal’s brother and claimed he had killed her, asking the family to take her body. The family rushed to Delhi and lodged a formal complaint soon after.
Police have registered a murder case against Ankur. He has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody as the investigation continues.
