Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday revised the schedule for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states, including Gujarat.
In an official notification, the ECI extended the deadline for enumeration to 11 December, from the original deadline of December 4.
Though the official notification does not say anything about the reasons for the revised schedule, the change comes in as a major relief for the lakhs of BLOs involved in the exercise across the 12 states.
The overburdened and stressed BLOs have been complaining and so have been the opposition political parties.
In Gujarat, five BLOs have lost lives, including one by suicide. In the case of suicide, the teacher mentioned about the stress he had to undergo. He also mentioned that he cannot take it any longer.
Deaths of BLOs have been also reported from West Bengal.
Opposition parties have been questioning the short duration in which the exercise is being undertaken and alleged that the BJP is doing this win elections.
The SIR exercise is currently underway in the states and UTs of Uttar Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
