A devastating accident near Modasa in Gujarat’s Arvalli district claimed four lives in the wee hours of Tuesday when an ambulance suddenly caught fire, according to police. Among those dead is one-day-old baby boy.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on the Modasa–Dhansura road. A one-day-old infant, who had been unwell since birth, was being transferred from a hospital in Modasa to a private facility in Ahmedabad for advanced care.
Police inspector D. B. Vala told a section of the media that the vehicle burst into flames while en route, resulting in a tragic loss of life.
Those who died in the blaze included the newborn; the child’s father, 38-year-old Jignesh Mochi from Mahisagar district; Dr. Shantilal Rentia, 30, of Ahmedabad; and nurse Bhuriben Manat, 23, from Arvalli. All four were seated in the rear section of the ambulance, Vala added.
Three others—driver Ankit Thakor and two of Mochi’s relatives, Gaurang Mochi and Gitaben Mochi—managed to escape with burn injuries and were admitted to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
CCTV footage released by the police shows the ambulance slowing near a petrol pump after the driver noticed flames at the back of the vehicle. While those in the front were able to evacuate, the four passengers in the rear could not be saved despite the fire brigade reaching the site promptly.
District Superintendent of Police Manoharsinh Jadeja told reporters that forensic teams have been called in to examine the ambulance and determine what caused the fire.
