From Power Cuts To Power Player: Ghising Tipped As Interim PM

| Updated: September 11, 2025 20:55

A man who once lit up a darkened nation is now being seen as the figure to steer Nepal through its political blackout. Just two days after KP Sharma Oli’s dramatic exit, Kulman Ghising’s name has surged to the forefront, championed by the energised, outspoken Gen Z movement that has taken to the streets demanding change. Their vision for an interim prime minister is clear: someone with a proven record of delivering under pressure. And for many, that someone is Ghising.

As protests continued to escalate, the Nepal Army imposed restrictive orders across the country, followed by a curfew lasting until 6 am Thursday.

Reports have emerged about former chief justice Sushila Karki, Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah, and Kulman Ghising being choices to head the interim government.

An electrical engineer by training, Ghising became a hero when he pulled Nepal out of the grip of relentless blackouts.

Under his leadership at the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the country witnessed the end of its infamous 18-hour daily power cuts. This feat turned him into a household name. He became a symbol of effective leadership in action.

Ghising’s journey with the Nepal Electricity Authority began in 1994. He started at the ground level but rose through the ranks.

In 2016, Ghising was appointed managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority. It’s a position that would go on to define his public legacy. Though he was replaced five years ago after completing a full four-year term, his reinstatement in 2021 spoke of his stature. It reflected not just the public’s confidence in his leadership, but also the establishment’s acknowledgment of the difference he had made.

Reports claim he has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Regional Institute of Technology in Jamshedpur.

He later earned a master’s in power systems engineering from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, Tribhuvan University, Nepal.

This year, the KP Sharma Oli government removed him from his post as executive director of the NEA, just four months before his tenure was set to end in August. He was replaced by Hitendra Dev Shakya.

His removal sparked sharp criticism from opposition parties and civil society. Many viewed it as a politically motivated decision, arguing that Ghising had delivered results and deserved to complete his term.
