Shaktisinh Gohil, Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, on Friday demanded that the state government should generously provide adequate compensation to the farmers who suffered massive losses due to unseasonal rains during Diwali.
Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Gohil said the compensation given by the state government is very less and is nothing but a mockery.
The state government had announced a compensation of Rs. 10,000 crore for the farmers.
Gohil pointed out that the crop was almost ready and the rains came just ahead of the time they were to harvest it.
The Congress MP said that despite BJP led Government at the Centre and a BJP government in Gujarat, the farmers of Gujarat do not have the benefit of the crop insurance scheme. If today they were covered under the scheme, their losses would have been covered and they would not be dying by suicide.
Gohil reminded that when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister, he had announced a large subsidy and a scheme by which farmers can take crop insurance at a nominal cost. This was at a time when Gujarat had faced drought.
