Recently, 1.30 kg of gold estimated at Rs. 1.62 crore was recovered from a passenger who came to Ahmedabad from Jeddah.
This has not been a one off case. According to details, gold worth more than Rs. 22 crore has been seized at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad so far in 2025.
A newspaper report has quoted customs department officials saying that people smuggling gold try various tricks.
The officials have been further quoted saying that if suspicious passengers are found and if they notice even the slightest suspicious movement, they are immediately arrested.
In most cases, such a person is caught with smuggled gold. Air Intelligence Unit officials also check the profiles of passengers and provide information to the customs department, the officials said.
A record is also being kept of how many trips the passenger has made abroad.
Due to the increased incidents of smuggling at the airport, two new baggage screening machines with the latest technology have been installed at the airport.
Currently, there are seven such package screening machines at the airport, which are located near the Green Channel, Red Channel and Air Intelligence Unit for checking handbags.
