A bomb threat email sent to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly during its ongoing budget session on Wednesday morning triggered an evacuation and a high-alert security sweep, which later confirmed the threat to be a hoax.
The email, written in Punjabi was received on the Assembly’s official ID around 8:45 am, just minutes before proceedings were scheduled to begin. Claiming that a bomb had been planted inside the complex, it prompted authorities to immediately clear the premises. MLAs and staff were evacuated as police teams moved in to conduct a thorough search. Sources claimed that this email was sent by pro Khalistan groups.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Piyush Vanda said local police launched an immediate operation to check for explosives. After nearly an hour-long search, Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police Ravi Teja Vasamsetty confirmed that nothing suspicious had been found.
While the Assembly scare turned out to be a hoax, it reflects a worrying trend across Gujarat, where bomb threat emails—particularly targeting schools—have become increasingly frequent. Over the past six months alone, nearly 68 schools across cities such as Ahmedabad and Vadodara have received similar threats, leading to repeated evacuations, disruption of classes, and anxiety among parents.
Despite the scale and recurrence of these incidents, enforcement outcomes remain limited. Police say many of the emails are sent using spoofed or encrypted channels, complicating efforts to trace their origin. A few cases have been linked to minors, but there have been very few confirmed arrests leading to sustained prosecution, raising concerns about deterrence.
The pattern underscores a growing misuse of digital anonymity to trigger public panic, even as authorities continue to treat every threat—real or fake—with the highest level of seriousness.
