A scheduled IndiGo flight from Goa to Surat was grounded on Monday after a passenger allegedly tampered with the aircraft’s emergency exit system, triggering a security breach moments before takeoff.
The incident occurred at Dabolim Airport. It involved 34-year-old Divyesh Sidpara, a resident of Gujarat. According to airline officials, the flight was preparing for departure when Sidpara reportedly opened the emergency flap cover, ignoring clear warnings from the cabin crew.
The quick intervention of the airline staff averted any immediate danger, though the act caused a technical fault and raised significant safety concerns. IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, filed a formal complaint with Dabolim Police, terming the incident a serious breach of aviation protocols.
“The aircraft had not yet taken off when the passenger attempted to open the emergency exit,” confirmed a police spokesperson. “There were no injuries, but the act posed a potential threat to the safety of all onboard.”
Sidpara has been booked under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The section pertains to negligent or reckless actions that could endanger human life or safety. Although no harm was caused, the offence carries a maximum penalty of three months’ imprisonment, a fine of ₹2,500, or both.
According to authorities, legal proceedings are underway and emphasized that such violations will be treated with strict seriousness to ensure the safety and discipline of air travel.
The flight was rescheduled after the aircraft underwent necessary safety inspections and clearances.
