Gujarat may soon get chip manufacturing plant as the state government is in talks with chip makers in the US, South Korea and Japan to set up a plant here.
Gujarat ACS Industries and Mines SJ Haider said talks were underway with several companies to set up plants in the said.
It may be noted that US-based Micron has already started construction of its $2.75 billion chip-manufacturing plant in Sanand.
Earlier, Taiwan-based Foxconn had tied up with Vedanta group for setting up a chip plant in Gujarat but later the former had backed out of the joint venture and decided to go solo. Indian companies like the Reliance Industries, Jindal group, Murugappa group, Larsen and Toubro have also evinced interest in being the key players in this sector.
India intensified its efforts to become self-reliant in chips post Covid after the entire world faced shortage of chips due to extended lockdown in China. The efforts that started in 2021 and are now close to fruition.
According to media reports, Global companies like AMD have already made India their home and are at an advanced stage to capitalise on India’s technological prowess and trained manpower. Qualcomm has already announced that it will outsource chip manufacturing to India once it has the infrastructure in place.
The Centre has also announced setting up of courses in the Indian universities to produce engineers that will be needed to scale up chip-manufacturing in India.
