The Supreme Court has asked Gujarat Government to rationalise the pay structure of the teaching staff.
Though Gujarat is a vibrant state with entrepreneurship believed to be in the blood of Gujaratis, in last two and half decades, the quality of education in the State has declined abnormally.n One of the reasons is the State government’s penchant to promote private schools and colleges and not pay any attention to education as a government subject and the most crucial reason is the deplorable pay that most teachers get in Gujarat.
Now, the Supreme Court has criticised the State for making ad-hoc appointments even when sanctioned posts remain vacant. The Supreme Court has expressed dismay at the low salaries given to Assistant Professors who are appointed on contractual basis in various Government Colleges in the State of Gujarat. This is called the fixed pay system in Gujarat.
The Apex Court stated that it was high time for the State to rationalise the pay structure of Assistant Professors on the basis of functions that they perform.
The Supreme Court of India has delivered a significant ruling on the long-standing pay disparity faced by contractual Assistant Professors in Gujarat. In the case of Shah Samir Bharatbhai & Others vs. State of Gujarat & Others, the Court has upheld the principle of equal pay for equal work and directed that contractual Assistant Professors must be paid at least the minimum pay scale of regularly appointed Assistant Professors.Currently in Gujarat, assistant professors on contractual basis get only Rs 30,000 per month while regularly appointed professors in the same category get nearly one lac rupees a month.
