Gujarat Raises Retirement Age For Home Guards To 58

| Updated: December 8, 2025 14:42

In a significant policy shift aimed at supporting thousands of home guard volunteers, the Gujarat government has approved a three-year extension to their retirement age. The change, introduced through an amendment to Rule 9 of the Mumbai Home Guards Rules, 1953, increases the retirement threshold from 55 to 58 years.

The home guards organisation, originally formed on December 6, 1947 in the then Greater Mumbai State, was created to bolster the police force in maintaining public order and providing crucial support during emergencies, including natural calamities and other crises.

Announcing the decision, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi highlighted the continued contribution of the force as a vital auxiliary to the police. Operating on an honorary basis, home guard personnel are deployed for election duties, traffic regulation, night patrols, VIP protection, and crowd management during festivals and major events.

Sanghavi said the extended service period would not only uplift morale but also enable members to contribute their experience and skills for an additional three years. The move, he added, offers volunteers more stability, helping them balance family and social obligations while continuing their public service.

Officials believe the decision will strengthen the force and enhance its capacity to support day-to-day policing and emergency response across the state.
