Gujarat To Have 17 New Talukas

| Updated: September 24, 2025 18:36

The Gujarat government on Wednesday said that the State Cabinet has unanimously sanctioned the formation of 17 new talukas by reorganizing the existing 21 talukas across the state.

State Government Spokesperson Rushikesh Patel told reporters in Gandhinagar that the move is part of a citizen-focused strategy aimed at administrative decentralization. The restructuring is expected to bring district and taluka-level offices closer to the people, improving access to key services in sectors such as health, education, economy, and social welfare. It will also reduce travel time and expenses for residents of remote villages when accessing government facilities.

Patel further revealed that the Cabinet has given its nod to the creation of a new district Vav-Tharad. This district will comprise six talukas from the current Banaskantha district—namely Vav, Tharad, Suigam, Bhabhar, Diyodar, and Lakhani—with Tharad designated as the district headquarters.

Patel said the idea of empowering taluka-level governance was originally introduced under the ATVT (“Aapno Taluko, Vibrant Taluko”) initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. This marks the most significant expansion since 2013, when 23 new talukas were added. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, this is the largest single addition of talukas to date.

The spokesperson also noted that during the last Independence Day celebrations, the Chief Minister had unveiled the Gramotthan scheme, aimed at transforming rural areas with urban-style infrastructure and amenities. The establishment of new taluka headquarters will support this vision.

He emphasized that these administrative changes are part of the larger national objective “Developed India @2047,” aligning with Gujarat’s goal of achieving developed state status by the same year. Of the newly announced talukas, 10 qualify as developed talukas, making them eligible for special development grants.

In addition to improved governance structures, the new talukas and districts will benefit from enhanced financial support for infrastructure and development projects.

An official gazette notification regarding the establishment of the new talukas will be issued shortly.
